Crops
Winter Wheat – 180 Hectares
Growing- Seeds are sown in September/October, roots and shoots develop prior to the winter when the plant becomes dormant as soon as the temperature drops below 7°C. The plants grow rapidly from March onwards. The wheat is harvested in September.
Uses - The wheat is sold for distilling into alcohol spirit used in whisky, vodka and gin production. Wheat can be used for animal feed, usually pig and chicken feed. Bread flour is mainly produced in England.
The straw is stored and used for cattle bedding.

Peas and Carrots
Growing -  Fields are let out to grow peas for vining and carrots for supermarkets. The peas are sown in April and harvested in July/August by very large machines called viners.  The carrots are covered with straw to protect them from frost and harvested in the spring.
Uses - The peas are taken straight from the fields to a specialist freezing plant in less than 1 hour to ensure that they remain tender, fresh and of good quality for freezing.  The carrots are washed, pre-packed and sold in supermarkets in various forms.

Crop care
All crops are fed nutrients as fertiliser to meet the needs of the growing plants. Two types are used, cattle, sheep and pig manure and artificial fertiliser some of which is diluted on the farm by mixing ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate or urea with water. The large tanks used for this are found in the farmyard.

Soil sampling takes place regularly to ensure nutrient levels are correct and that magnesium limestone can be added to keep the naturally acidic soils at the correct ph to grow crops and grass well.

Crops can get diseases and so we keep them healthy by spraying them to prevent disease harming them, but only when necessary.

to July. The crop is harvested in succession from July to October.
Uses - Most of the crop is sold for freezing but some is sold to packers who prepare it for sale in Supermarkets.
Sheep are finished on the plant material that is left after harvesting.
Harvesters
Harvesting is done by students who come from various parts of the world to earn money and to learn about our culture.

Grass
Growing -  The grass is fertilised and cared for to ensure that there is enough grass for the animals in both winter and summer.
Uses - The grass is grazed by the cattle and sheep in the summer and some is made into silage/haylage for winter feed.

Potatoes
