Wildlife and Conservation

Strathmore Farming Company participates in a range of environmental management projects.
Countryside Premium Scheme and Rural Stewardship Scheme

Wildlife and ConservationHedges
As part of this initiative we have planted 5000 metres of new hedges. The hedges in the scheme are left to grow and only cut every second or third year in January to leave feed for the birds in the winter. The hedges provide cover for a great many birds especially yellow hammers and finches.

Beetle Banks
A 6m strip of rough grass is left to grow along the length of a field. This provides cover for invertebrates which provide food for voles. These voles in turn provide food for the many owls that are found on the farms. Ladybirds shelter in this rough grass and as they feed on the aphids which live on our cereal crops in the summer, are especially encouraged.

Owl Boxes
We provide owls boxes which are used by the tawny owls. There are also barn owls to be found living here.

Wildlife and ConservationField Margins
A 6 m strip of land is left along some watersides. This strip prevents any spray from drifting into the burns and provides a haven for wildlife.

RSPB Management Agreement.
We have an area of land which we manage in partnership with RSPB to encourage waders, lapwings and curlews.

Moorland Management Plan
On the higher ground we manage the area to encourage heather for grouse. The land also supports linnets, pipits and the rare twyte.
